How to rent a boat without a licence on the French Riviera

Three legal solutions to sail without holding a boating licence — with real costs, limits and suitable boats in 2026.

No boating licence but dreaming of a day at Pampelonne or visiting Saint-Tropez by sea? Good news: three options exist to rent without a licence. We detail each with rates and restrictions.

What French law says in 2026

To operate a boat over 6 HP (4.5 kW) at sea, French regulation requires a coastal or offshore licence. Below 6 HP, no licence is needed — but at that power you're limited to small inflatables or fishing dinghies at 8 km/h. Unsuitable for a leisure outing on the Gulf.

The law allows two exceptions to rent a "real" boat without a licence: the presence of a professional skipper on board, or the rental of a truly licence-free boat under 6 HP with area restrictions. Additionally, some foreign licences are recognised by equivalence.

Operating without a licence a boat that requires one exposes you to a €1,500 fine and immediate navigation suspension. Professional agencies will systematically refuse to rent without a skipper to a client without a licence.

Option 1 — Rental with skipper (recommended)

The most popular and comfortable solution. You rent the boat of your choice (day cruiser, walkaround, yacht) and a professional skipper takes the helm for the day. You decide the programme, itinerary, anchorages — they handle navigation, safety and port manoeuvres.

Cost: €200 per full day (€100 half-day) on top of the boat rate. For a €650/day day cruiser + €200 skipper = €850 total, i.e. €106/person on a group of 8 — the most economical and comfortable option.

Benefits: you fully enjoy, you learn from your skipper if you plan to take the licence later, you access all fleet boats without restriction. Limits: none. The skipper is invisible during anchorages and only operates during navigation.

    Option 2 — Renting a licence-free boat (5-6 HP)

This option exists but is very limited on the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Available licence-free boats are generally small 4-6 metre inflatables, 5 or 6 HP engine, max speed 8 km/h. Capacity 4 to 6 people maximum.

Rate: €150 to €250 per day depending on season. Navigation area is limited to a 2 km radius around the departure port (safety limit for this type of vessel). You cannot reach Pampelonne from Sainte-Maxime with this type of boat (20 km, out of zone).

Benefits: full autonomy, freedom for small coastal trips (Sainte-Maxime beaches, Canoubiers Bay, Saint-Tropez port along the coast). Limits: slow, small, not comfortable for a real sea day. Suitable for "mini-trips" of 2 hours maximum.

We don't offer licence-free boats (5-6 HP) in our fleet, as we prioritise performant boats that deliver a real French Riviera experience. For a serious outing, rental with skipper remains our recommendation.

Option 3 — Recognised foreign licences

If you're foreign and hold a boating licence in your country, some equivalences are recognised by France. Directly accepted: European Union licences (Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.), the ICC (International Certificate of Competence), and Australian, New Zealand, Canadian licences.

Not automatically recognised: American licences (unless validated ICC), Asian and Latin American ones. In that case, a pass through a French sailing school is required to obtain equivalence (2 to 4 weeks, €350).

Practical solution: if in doubt about your foreign licence, send us a photo before booking — we validate in 24h with our maritime lawyer. If not recognised, you rent with skipper at no relative extra cost (€200/day).

Which boats suit a skippered rental?

Our entire Daily Boat Rental fleet is available with skipper. The three models we most often recommend to licence-free clients are versatile, comfortable and suited to classic itineraries.

    • Lady L (Axopar 28 ST) — 8 passengers, aft cabin, perfect for couples and small families.
    • La Vie Est Belle (Whiteshark 28) — 10 passengers, walkaround, ideal for groups of friends.
    • Topi (fast day cruiser) — 8 passengers, 30-knot speed, for Pampelonne and Estérel without wasted time.

    FAQ

Can I drive a bit with a skipper on board?

Yes, the skipper can let you take the helm in safe zones (open sea, no traffic) for initiation. Clients who plan to take the licence later really appreciate this. In port zones or dense traffic, they always keep the helm for legal responsibility.

Does the skipper stay with us all day?

Yes, they're on board throughout. During anchorages (lunch, swimming, snorkelling), they stay discreet at the front or back, often reading or checking weather. They don't participate in your day unless invited — some become real local guides on good addresses.

Can I take the licence on site?

Yes, several sailing schools in Sainte-Maxime and Saint-Tropez offer the coastal licence in 3 to 5 days (around €350 all-in). Useful if you plan to return regularly. For a single outing, skippered rental remains more cost-efficient.

Can I rent a licence-free boat for a birthday or bachelor party?

Absolutely — it's even the most common use. With a skipper, you have freedom to organise your event (music, aperitif, decor) without worrying about navigation. Your skipper can even participate in the staging (surprise, proposal).

For a bachelor/bachelorette party, should I notify the skipper?

Yes, please let us know 48h before the outing for logistical adjustment (music, anchorage breaks). The skipper remains professional and discreet, but anticipation ensures a smooth trip. Festive atmosphere accepted, within respect of maritime rules and neighbours.
